Poet Basudeb Rath was born at Narasinghpur of Balikuda block in Jagatsinghpur (in Orissa, a state in the eastern part of India) on June 5, 1913. In the childhood, he learnt Sanskrit and Oriya literature. In his twenties, he moved to Kolkata for a job. In spite of economic hurdles and deep engagement in family life, he continued his pursuit of learning and writing.

At the later stage of his life, he got engaged in cultivation and farming, and created a beautiful garden-Ashram. It is believed that most of his poetry was penned in serene ambience of this garden. He died on September 29, 1985 - on the fifth day after death of his wife, Thukamani Devi.
